The last message radioed by two pilots of an F-15K fighter jet which crashed Wednesday night indicated that they were operating normally just before the fatal incident.

Air Forces officials said that the pilots sent a "knock it off" signal just before the crash. Those words are used when an operating aircraft moves to another mission after having successfully completed a mission, or cannot conduct a mission any longer in the face of emergencies.

Their voices were "calm" at the time of sending the message, Air Force sources said. No further signals were received from the ill-fated aircraft until the crash.

Some military experts say that the pilots may have experienced vertigo after the radio communication. Vertigo is a condition in which pilots confuse sea for sky during high-speed gyrating flights over the sea. Accordingly, they could have mistakenly driven the aircraft into the East Sea.

Others said the likelihood of the pilots experiencing vertigo is low because the F-15K aircraft is equipped with a device to prevent hallucination. They again hinted at machinery defects as the main cause of the crash.

The aircraft crashed Wednesday night into the sea 48 kilometers off the coast of Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, during nighttime interception training along with two other F-15Ks.

Its two pilots, Maj. Kim Sung-dae, 36, and Cap. Lee Jae-wook, 32, were killed in the accident. Kim was an instructor pilot for the F-15K squadron.

Their remains will be buried at National Memorial Board in Daejeon.

수요일 밤 순직한 두명의 F15K 조종사가 추락하기 직전 마지막으로 남긴 교신 내용은 그들이 정상적으로 비행 훈련을 수행하고 있었음을 시사해주고 있다.

공군 당국자는 조종사들이 추락 직전에 ‘임무 중지’라는 교신을 남겼다고 말했다. 임무 중지는 조종사들이 자주 사용하는 용어로 훈련을 마칠 때 혹은 다음 단계 훈련으로 넘어갈 때 그리고 훈련을 수행하기 어려울 때 사용한다.

교신 당시 조종사들의 음성은 차분했다고 공군 소식통은 전했다. 추락 시점까지 그 이외의 추가적인 교신 내용은 없었다.

일부 군사 전문가들은 조종사들이 교신 직후 버티고 상태에 빠졌을 지 모른다고 말하고 있다. 버티고 상태는 전투기가 해상에서 고속으로 회전할 때 조종사가 바다를 하늘로 착각하는 현상을 말한다. 따라서 조종사들이 실수로 동해로 전투기를 몰아 추락했을 수 있다.

다른 전문가들은 F15K가 이런 착각상태를 방지하는 장치가 있어 조종사들이 버티고 상태에 빠졌을 가능성은 낮다고 말하고 있다. 그들은 추락 원인으로 기체 결함을 시사했다.

수요일 밤 경북 포항 해변에서 48km 떨어진 곳에서 한 F15K 전투기가 다른 두 대의 F15K 전투기와 함께 야간 요격 훈련을 실시하던 중 바다로 추락하는 사고가 발생했다.

이 사고로 김성대 중령 (36)과 이재욱 소령 (32)이 사망했다. 김 중령은 F15K 전투중대 교관이었다.

고인들의 유해는 대전 국립현충원에 안장될 예정이다.
