A government committee yesterday proposed a 12.3 percent increase in the minimum wage next year despite business circles` concern about a stronger won and soaring oil prices.

The Minimum Wage Council announced that it set the minimum wage level for 2007 at 3,480 won per hour, which means 27,840 won per day on the basis of an eight-hour working day.

It marks a 12.3 percent increase compared to last year`s 3,100 won per hour and 24,800 won per day, respectively.

The increase will benefit nearly 1.8 million workers accounting for 11.9 percent of the labor force.

The panel, consisting of labor, management and neutral commissioners, will submit the proposal to the Labor Ministry. The minister will finally set the minimum wage level by Aug. 5.

A major business lobby expressed concern about the decision that would increase labor costs amid weak economic conditions.

The Korea Employer Federation said in a statement that the increase will add difficulty to already struggling small companies that use low-income employees. It will lead to a decrease in jobs as they tried to cut costs, it said.

최저임금위원회는 어제 원화 강세와 고유가 추세에 관한 재계의 우려에도 불구하고 내년도 최저임금을 12.3% 인상하기로 결정했다.

최저임금위원회는 내년 최저임금을 시간급은 3천480원, 하루 8시간을 기준으로 한 일급은 2만7천840원으로 각각 결정했다고 밝혔다.

이는 지난해 최저임금인 시간급 3천100원, 일급 2만4천800원에 비해 12.3% 인상된 것이다.

이번 최저임금 인상으로 전체 근로자의 11.9%인 180만여명이 혜택을 받을 수 있을 것으로 추정된다.

최저임금위는 이날 결정된 최저임금을 노동부에 제출하게 되며 노동부 장관은 8월5일까지 확정 고시하게 된다.

주요 재계단체는 경기 약세 속에 임금 비용의 부담을 가중시킬 이번 결정에 우려를 표명했다.

경영자총협회는 성명을 통해서 최저임금 인상이 저임금 근로자를 채용하고 있는 중소기업들의 어려움을 가중시킬 거라고 말했다. 중소기업들이 비용을 절감하려 할 것이기 때문에 최저임금 인상은 일자리 감소를 유발할 거라고 말했다.
