Warranties are a seller’s promise to stand by its products. Most major purchases like computers or cars come with a warranty, as do smaller purchases, like stereos or other electronic housewares. Warranties are not required by law, but are frequently found on most products. If you are making a purchase, you should consider the individual characteristics of a warranty, as each can vary in the amount of coverage it provides. At the minimum, warranties are required to provide what the product implies that it will do; for example, that a blender will blend or a hair dryer will dry hair. Most warranties are good for a fixed time, then they _______. You can protect yourself by buying products from companies with good reputation and taking good care of your new purchase. There are consequences to not taking care of a product as most warranties require that you use the product in a certain manner.
1. Which of the following is most appropriate for the blank?

2. According to the passage, which of the following is not true?
(1) The extent of warranty coverage should be taken into account when one makes a purchase.
(2) A product without a warranty may still be sold on the market.
(3) If a product is defective, the consumer is entitled to a refund during the warranty
period.
(4) Many companies will refuse to honor the warranty if one fails to use the product
according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
We know all this well enough when we contemplate the dictatorships. But when we try to picture our own system, by way of contrast, what picture do we have in our minds? It is, is it not, that anyone may stand up on his own soapbox and say anything he pleases, like the individuals in Kipling’s poem who sit each in his separate star and draw the Thing as they see it for the God of Things as they are. Kipling, perhaps, could do this, since he was a poet. But the ordinary mortal isolated on his separate star will have an hallucination, and a citizenry declaiming from separate soapboxes will poison the air with hot and nonsensical confusion. It is not true that liberty has developed among civilized men when anyone is free to set up a soapbox, is free to hire a hall where he may expound his opinions to those who are willing to listen. __________, freedom of speech is established when different opinions are expounded in the same hall to the same audience.
3. Which of the following is most appropriate for the blank?
(1) Therefore (2) In addition (3) Finally (4) On the contrary
4. Which of the following is most true according to the passage?
(1) We should respect different opinions on the same base in a democratic society.
(2) The freedom of speech is important in its separate situation.
(3) Dictatorships don’t allow any kind of soapbox to declaim one’s opinion.
(4) Ordinary people want to keep their originality in their isolated stars.
